Street Toyota is proud to be a part of the Amarillo community and has always made it a priority to give back to those living in the Panhandle area that have welcomed them and helped them grow. As the holiday season is upon us, Street Toyota undoubtedly wants to continue to strive to be a positive influence in the community. This past Thanksgiving, the team at Street Toyota helped fulfill a young cancer patient’s wish by helping another cancer patient make sure they always have a way to get to his chemotherapy appointments. Through a young girl’s dream and Street Toyota’s generosity, a local mom now has the transportation she so desperately needed to ensure her son Aaron could get to his life-saving chemotherapy treatments, could get to school and she could get to work every day.
How Carla met Aaron
This incredible story of support begins with a 10-year-old girl cancer patient named Carla. Last month Carla went in for chemotherapy and on the way into the building with her mom, Carla passed a boy standing outside waiting. After her treatment was finished about two hours later, Carla and her mom exited the building to find the same young man still standing outside waiting for a ride. Carla decided to reach out to this boy and found out that he was also undergoing treatment for cancer. Aaron, who is 16 years old, then explained that he and his mother do not have a car, which makes it hard for him to get to and from chemotherapy, school, and his mom from getting to work. Aaron’s situation touched Carla’s heart. From that moment on, she made it her mission to find Aaron and his mother a way to get to school and work every day as well as get Aaron to his life-saving chemotherapy appointments.
Carla looks to the community for help
Carla and her family decided to start raising funds to purchase a car for Aaron and his mom. Carla held a weekend garage sale specifically for Aaron and his mother. The turn out from the members of the community was promising and Carla collected about $1100 towards the purchase of Aaron’s future car. Last month, Carla celebrated her 10th birthday with her friends and family who gathered to celebrate the strong, young girl. A friend of the family, Yolanda Vasquez, brought a special man with her to the party, Larry Tauchen. This gentleman heard the surprising and passionate story of Carla’s dedication for Aaron and decided to take it a step further. Larry and Yolanda then went to Roy Parsley, Larry’s car dealer. Roy then shared this story with Mike Good, Street Toyota’s General Manager, to see if there was any way that Street could help make both Carla and Aaron’s dreams a reality.
Carla reaches out and Street Toyota extends a helping hand
The baton had now been passed to the Street Toyota family and they decided to fly with it. Every year, the staff gives Joe Street, the President and owner of Street Toyota, a Christmas present and every year, he protests the gift. So this year, Mike and Joe decided to pay it forward instead. The money they would have used for Joe’s Christmas present was put toward a pre-owned vehicle for Aaron and his mother, Maria. Once the plan was put into place, the excitement really began.
A special day after Thanksgiving
Larry, who had been lending his own car out to Maria and Aaron for the past few weeks, asked them to bring it into Street Toyota the day after Thanksgiving because it needed service. Larry also asked Carla and her family to meet him at Street Toyota the same day. Upon arrival, the two families were taken into the garage where customers pick up their newly purchased vehicles. Joe Street, Mike Good and many other team members of Street Toyota joined together to show their support for two kids who are both bravely battling cancer. Joe began the small ceremony by expressing his thanks to the families for their strength and endurance to make it through the hardest of times. Joe then turned to Aaron and his mom and revealed to them a blue Honda Accord that would be their new transportation. Immediately tears filled the eyes of Aaron’s mom Maria. She could not get the words out fast enough to thank everyone who was involved in making this happen. Her gratitude was overwhelming. Both families truly enjoyed seeing the community support them and their fight against cancer. In reality, the fight against cancer is not just the battle of the person with the diagnosis. We are all of us responsible for the lives that surround us and we are all of us responsible for the outcome. We are responsible for making the decision to be a positive force in our local world or to be stagnant.
Carla’s mission to help other children fighting cancer
Carla’s successful mission to help Aaron and his mother is just one of her acts of kindness. Carla also supports an organization that provides Christmas gifts to children at a pediatric cancer ward in Chihuahua, Mexico. Street Toyota decided to donate funds to help her successfully complete this mission as well. The Street Toyota staff also asked Carla’s mom, Lucy, what she really loves. Lucy explained that Carla was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. Therefore, Street Toyota responded by giving Carla her own gift of three tickets to the Cowboys versus Packers game on December 14 as well as the opportunity for Carla, her dad and her cousin to tour the stadium and have a meet-and-greet with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

In Texas, pride flows bigger than the Rio Grande. Every Texan takes pride in being a part of a diverse state with a wide range of industries, nationalities, cultures and ways to have fun. Pride literally becomes part of the package when children are born in Texas; there is just no way around it. Texans also love their trucks, and there are more trucks sold in the state of Texas than any other state in the union. So what better place to plant some of the truck roots of Toyota Motor Corporation than the great state of Texas! This year, Texas has reached many milestones with Toyota and its great trucks, the Tacoma and Tundra.
Toyota and Texas have a great relationship
Texas currently has 96 Toyota dealerships statewide, which account for a total of 17,926 jobs. $2.9 billion has been invested into the state by Toyota. Communities all over Texas have also been positively affected by $13.4 million in the form of philanthropic donations both on a corporate and local level. San Antonio is the hub of all this Toyota activity and has been building its business there for over a decade now. According to Governor Rick Perry, “Toyota has proven to be a solid partner for the State of Texas and a valued member of the community of San Antonio.”
A decade of trucks and treasures
Since ground was broken in 2003, Toyota Texas has helped build the Texas community and vice versa. Toyota Texas has reached the milestone of producing one million trucks in Texas alone. San Antonio builds the Tacoma and the Tundra. The new 1794 edition of the 2014 Tundra is actually a tribute to the ranch that was founded in 1794, on which the truck plant is now located. Because of this monumental year of celebrating a decade and the one million mark, Toyota Texas decided to donate 10 trucks to thank the community for all of its encouragement and friendship. “10 for 10” gave 10 non-profits and institutions a Texas-built Tundra or Tacoma. Toyota has really put a lot of heart and soul into the state of Texas and the residents of Texas have done nothing but reciprocate these passions exponentially. You can experience the pride and determination of both Texas and Toyota at Street Toyota.

Insurance for your vehicle is a legal requirement that will not be going away anytime soon. Most people do everything they can, but in many cases do not realize the cost of insurance can be negotiable. We have put together a list of things to know, factors to consider, and actionable ways to help you save.
Control all the major premium determiners you can
The cost of insurance premiums depends on two major things, the driver and the vehicle, that splinter off into many variables. Being able to control the variables you can makes a large difference in what your premium will be. While you cannot control all of them, pay special attention to those that you can, or improving on those that may need help.
The Driver – Age, gender, education, geographic location, marital status, tickets and other moving violations, credit score, accident history and miles driven per year all contribute to the final price.
The Vehicle – New or used vehicle, make, model, engine size, safety features, crash-test scoring, commonly stolen vehicles, average repair costs and nature of vehicle use are all factors in setting the price.
While age, gender, and marital status are out of our control in determining the cost, you can control the rest of the factors used in negotiating the final price. Take the necessary steps to improve any areas you can, and if you do have a history of speeding, you may have to pass up that sports car to save money until your driving record improves. Take the time to shop around and you will be happier with the choice in the long run.
You have to do the homework
Start by comparing quotes from a variety of insurance carriers, we recommend speaking with someone over the phone. Ask them about the different discounts they offer for your specific situation i.e. an individual with multiple vehicles, a parent with teen drivers, etc. While you have them on the phone you can also inquire about how your specific choice of vehicle, driving record and credit will affect your premium.
It should be easy to shorten the list of possibilities once you have all their information. Chances are, the company offering the largest discounts also have the highest base prices. Take your shortened list and speak to an agent about numbers.
Savings without policy changes
- Speeding tickets, traffic violations, and accidents increase your premium more than any other factor. Vehicles built for performance will have higher insurance due to the nature of their use.
- Use any additional discount you qualify for such as AAA membership, being a senior citizen, and driving very little. Ask about discounts for safety features such as antilock brakes, running lights, and anti-theft systems.
- Stay with the same company for a long period of time when you choose one. You can negotiate for larger renewal discounts the longer you do business with them.
Policy changes that save
- Combining home and auto insurance will apply another discount if the company offers them both.
- Increase the deductible for some heavy savings. Still cover yourself for a large accident, but drive safely and save the cash.
- Drop full coverage down to liability. Find out how much your vehicles worth and compare what it costs to insure it. Keep in mind that this is not possible if you are financing/leasing a vehicle, you must maintain full coverage on any vehicle you do not hold the title to.
